Six Hot Topics in Planetary Astronomy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Six hot topics in modern planetary astronomy are described: 1) lightcurves and densities of small bodies 2) colors of Kuiper belt objects and the distribution of the ultrared matter 3) spectroscopy and the crystallinity of ice in the outer Solar system 4) irregular satellites of the giant planets 5) the Main Belt Comets and 6) comets and meteor stream parents.

No Detectable H3 Emission from the Atmospheres of Hot Jupiters
H3 emission is the dominant cooling mechanism in Jupiter’s thermosphere and a useful probe of temperature and ion densities. The H3 ion is predicted to form in the thermospheres of close-in ‘hot Jupiters’ where its emission would be a significant factor in the thermal energy budget, affecting temperature and the rate of hydrogen escape from the exosphere. Hot Jupiters are predicted to have up t...
متن کاملCoronal activity with XMM-Newton and Chandra
XMM-Newton and Chandra have greatly deepened our knowledge of stellar coronae giving access to a variety of new diagnostics such that nowadays a review of stellar X-ray astronomy necessarily must focus on a few selected topics. Attempting to provide a limited but representative overview of recent discoveries I discuss three subjects: the solar-stellar connection, the nature of coronae in limiti...

Five coherent sections appear this year, addressing solar physics, cosmology (with WMAP highlights), gamma-ray bursters (and their association with Type Ia supernovae), extra-solar-system planets, and the formation and evolution of galaxies (from reionization to assemblage of Local Group galaxies). There are also eight incoherent sections that deal with other topics in stellar, galactic, and pl...
متن کاملα-capture Reaction Rates and the Production of the Heavy Magnesium Isotopes in Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars of Intermediate Mass
We present new rates for the 22Ne(α, n)25Mg and 22Ne(α, γ)26Mg reactions, with uncertainties that have been considerably reduced compared to previous estimates, and we study how these new rates affect the production of the heavy magnesium isotopes in models of intermediate mass Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars of different initial compositions. All the models have deep third dredge-up, hot b...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Studies of Transiting Planetary Systems
As of December 2007, radial velocity measurements and planetary transit surveys for nearby stars have already identified more than 250 planets around other stars. These “extrasolar planets” opened a new field of astronomy in the past decade. The discovery of many extrasolar planets have revealed the existence of exotic planets such as “hot Jupiters” and “eccentric planets,” showing the diversit...
